Dementia is an illness usually associated with old age, often characterized by a progressive decline in cognitive functions from the previous level. According to a study published in the Indian Journal of Public Health that cites various epidemiological evidence, it has been reported that the prevalence rate of Dementia in India ranges from 2 per 1000 to 35 per 1000 people.

This assumes scary dimensions as India is currently undergoing a phase of demographic transition wherein the aged population is rapidly growing. With life expectancy having increased, India currently has an elderly population that ranges around 104 million compared to 5.63 million in 1961.
